The well of life and the water of life. The water of life is a religious symbol for God as the source of life. Water has been used cultically in many cultures for purifications and the coronation of kings. In the apocalyptic, the idea of the spring is combined with the water of life that will spring from the new temple (Ezekiel 47:1-12).
In the New Testament, Jesus uses the term water of life to reveal himself as Christ to his listeners (John 4:10 and 7:37), and through baptism, the Christian person is incorporated into the spiritual community.
The well of life is the place in the Garden of Eden from which the four world rivers flowed. They were first depicted in art as four streams of water or as four women with water jars. Later, the image of a well with a central column, symbolizing Christ, from which four lion heads spout water (the Gospels), emerged. The well refers to both the baptismal font and the communion chalice and also symbolizes Mary, who carries the column and the water of life.
